5 Tools I Used in Georgia Tech’s OMSCS
Get jumpstarted on your OMSCS journey
Introduction
I am a 5 year professional with product and program management experience in the automotive engineering industry. I currently am enrolled in the 9th course in OMSCS and specializing in Interactive Intelligence. I wanted to write about 5 tools you would need to make your OMSCS journey smoother.
Course Catalog
You have to get familiar with the course catalog to know which courses you need to complete your specialization. There are four specializations in the OMSCS program: computational perception & robotics, computing systems, interactive intelligence, and machine learning.
There are three categories every student needs to satisfy: general courses, core courses, and elective courses. General courses can be found here. Core courses and elective courses can be found here. Make sure that the courses do not overlap and that you meet the required credits.
OMSCentral.com
How do you choose which course to take? This website has reviews and ratings of all courses that are offered by the program. It invites students to contribute by writing reviews and rate the course by difficulty, satisfaction, time spent, and so on.
Each course can be clicked to read reviews in detail.
Before every course registration, I looked up the courses from this website to see if I would enjoy the course and make sure the workload is manageable.
Canvas
This is a student-instructor workspace management platform where all video lectures, relevant documents, grades, and assignments are submitted. Use this platform to plan ahead on your assignments using the calendar feature and reminder system.
Duo Security
To log in to Buzzport, Canvas, or Georgia Tech email, you need to download Duo Security for a 2FA. Read this article by GT to learn how to set this up.
Slack
For most of my courses, I used Slack to communicate with peers and team members. If you are not familiar with Slack already, watch a couple of YouTube videos on Slack and it will help you a lot.
